End of semester

As our semester draws to a close, take some time to reflect on what you've learned.  Write down three things that you've learned and how they will improve your video projects in the future.  For those that are continuing into next semester, also list three things that you are looking forward to learning in the Spring.  Why do you want to learn these things?  What do you want to concentrate on doing better?  What could you improve?  What kind of projects are you looking forward to?

I learned about how to operate the Sony FS-5, I learned all about gain, white balance, aperture, etc., and I learned about a lot of production jobs. I learned a lot. I look forward to learning sound, and I'm excited for the PSA assignment. I'm interested in learning sound because that's the next step in films- dialogue. I want to concentrate on running through my mental checklist before filming a take- make sure everything's focused, everything's white balanced, etc.

Chase Sequence Reflection

Think back to when you pitched your chase film.  How close is your final product to what you envisioned? Write an in-depth reflection on what went well and what challenges you had while making it.  Dig deep!  How did you perform on the project?

I think the final product is pretty close to what I envisioned. We had to come up with a separate idea than the one we pitched.  I don't think anything went too well with the project. My group was so frustrating to work with, and they didn't even act like they cared. I don't think the final product reflected how much work I poured into pre production. I remember staying up late working on the presentation and finding images to describe our project. My group barely replied to any messages exchanged in the group chat. I messages the chat frequently, updates the slides and reviewed all work being put on every document, but the project ended up poor, and I'm so excited for the next one. so I can hopefully end up with a better group and prove myself.

TV Production

What are three ways that television production is different than feature film production?  What did you find interesting about this process?

I noticed the table read is different. During the television production process, the entire cast will get together and read the entire script from the beginning to end. After learning about the film production process, I noticed that difference. I also found it interesting how it seems super rushed, and they get everything done super fast. I can imagine that the environment that these people will work in will be a bit more intense.

Chain of Command

What are 3 key pieces of advice this presenter gives about the chain of command?  Why is it so important?

A chain of command is very important because if there isn't one, it'll be chaotic- people will be talking to others and it'll get loud. It's important that problems that are spotted are reported to the right people, so information can be quickly given and handed around properly. It's important that everyone's alert, because anyone can notice a problem and it's best to have everyone focusing to prevent confusion and mistakes. Lastly, it's important for conversations to be flowing, and communications to be open, but they shouldn't be too loud and disruptive to the point where they're interrupting the shoot.

Final Edit Process

Watch the following video that outlines the final edit process.  Write a long paragraph reflection.

To know what more you should edit in your final cut, take advice from people and construct your final edit so that your story is as clear as possible. You'll make sure to explore when are where different effects, sounds, and music can add to your film. Fully review and analyze your video and cut things out that aren't important, such as repeated phrases.

Director of Photography

Why is the director of photography role so important in a film?  What are some of their responsibilities on a film?

The DOP needs to have a good eye, and they should understand framing, camera and lighting techniques, and how they'll be used to impact the audience. The DOP is in charge of the visual look of the film. They'll read the screenplay, and work closely with the director to set up the look and feel of the film. Their responsibilities are the visual look of the film, and knowing what will look best. They also have to show up early with the camera crew to set everything up and rehearse.

Producer

Why is the producer's role so important in a film?  What are some of their responsibilities on the movie crew?

Producers are usually the first to get involved, spotting the creative opportunity of a production. They're usually the overall decision makers. They will come up with ideas, and hire people to write the script for it. They need to have commercial awareness. They have to be able to market it to the distributers and to the public. The producer will also work with everyone on the crew.

Movie Crew Jobs

Why are there so many different jobs on a movie crew?  What is one job that you learned about in this video that you'd never heard of.  Why might it seem interesting?

There are many different jobs on a movie crew because there's a lot to keep track of. I've never heard of a unit production manager. It seems interesting, and I've never heard of it. They break down scripts, make schedules, and oversee all things production, from locations to transportation.

Script Supervisor

What is the role of the script supervisor in a film production?  What are their responsibilities?

The script supervisor is also known as the "continuity person". The script supervisor writes down notes while the recording is in progress. They'll write notes in between takes, and keep track of all the cameras and keep track of what's seen by each camera. They'll usually be sitting right next to the director, and writing down everything the director will comment on, and answer director's questions.

What's called on set

In your own words, write a paragraph on what needs to be called on set before what and explain why it is so important.  Refer to the Production Process slides if needed.

Depending on the set, different crews will say different things. Everything said is important to alert everyone on set, and prepare them for the take.

1) AD calls “lock it up!”

2) AD calls "Picture is up!" Then "Quiet everyone!”
If recording audio, it's important to let everyone know, and to be quiet.

3) AD calls "Roll sound!”

4) Sound Mixer rolls sound. Announces "sound speed.”

5) AD calls "Roll camera!”

6) Camera Op rolls and calls "Camera Speed!”

7) 2nd AC is positioned, extends slate open

8) 2nd AC calls roll, shot, take then calls out "marker!"  Then claps the slate.

9) Camera Op refocuses to action, calls "Set!"

10) AD calls for action background, if it's needed in the scene.

11) Finally, the director calls "action!”

Shot VS Setup

What is the main difference between a shot vs. a setup?   What is the most important thing to keep in mind when you're going to shoot a scene?

The setup is the lights, position of actors, and the way all the props are set. Frequently, you want to shoot out of order to save time, and avoid changing your setup. That's the most important thing. A shot is the actual clip you want to shoot. Your setup is for your shot.

Coverage

In your own words explain what coverage is.  Why is it so important when you are shooting?

Coverage is the change in what's on the screen. You need shots of different things, and the actors from different angles. This is important to add more depth to your scene. You need to make sure that you shoot the same action from different points of view to make sure that it's easier to edit in post, and your editor has a lot of options.

Favorite Unit

What unit did you enjoy the most?  Why?  What are three things that you learned from the unit?  What are two things that you'd like to ...
