Why is the director of photography role so important in a film? What are some of their responsibilities on a film?
The DOP needs to have a good eye, and they should understand framing, camera and lighting techniques, and how they'll be used to impact the audience. The DOP is in charge of the visual look of the film. They'll read the screenplay, and work closely with the director to set up the look and feel of the film. Their responsibilities are the visual look of the film, and knowing what will look best. They also have to show up early with the camera crew to set everything up and rehearse.
